Hopefully the weather will be beautiful! :) Please remember to send your child to school with a sack lunch unless you contacted me previously to request that the cafeteria make a sack lunch for your child on field day. Also, don't forget to put sunscreen on your child and send them with 1-2 water bottles to keep them hydrated during their time outside. :)

And, lastly, this week is our last week of sending home books or homework!!!! So, don't be surprised if next week your child doesn't bring either of these items home. We are busy researching and learning as well as creating all sorts of fun crafts and projects to share with you when you come. So, in keeping with the theme of what we are learning we have decided to sing an ocean song for our performance.

On the day of the performance I would love for the kids to "dress the part" as much as they are able. It is certainly too cold to dress for the beach, but if your child has a hawaiian or "surfer" style shirt to wear that day, it would be really helpful. Also, if they have a pair of sunglasses, a beach towel and/or a beach hat please send those as well. :)

And, again, thank you for helping us make this a success!

We are really excited to share one of our favorite songs with you and the rest of the student body!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Green

Valentines Day Party

Well, our party was a great success! Please join the car rider pick up line using ONLY THE FIRST OR SECOND LANE. You should only access the 3rd lane once you have picked up your child. We ask that no one use the third lane to get ahead of other cars or to gain access to openings toward the front of the line.

2. There is no longer a separate loading area for kinder and a separate loading area for first grade. We will be loading cars in the area between the 2 signs posted and we will be loading both grades simultaneously.

3. We will only be loading cars that are located between the 2 loading signs.

And lastly, if you have any questions about the information that you have read on my blog or the letter that has come home from Mr. Iorio on this subject, please feel free to contact me and I will try to clear up any confusion. :)

Thank you so much for being patient and flexible. And Valentines Day is right around the corner! Can you believe it?

Please don't forget to begin working on your child's Valentines Day box project. You can decorate any small box that you have around the house (shoe boxes are perfect!) with a Valentines Day theme. Be sure that when you cut out the slot for the valentine cards that you make the slot large enough. Often the children bring cards with candy attached. So a thin slot can be a problem. :) You can begin sending in those boxes on Monday, February 8th.

This week in class we will be learning the following:

Writing - Word Choice/Poetry
Social Studies/Science - Landforms
Math - Review/CBA
Spelling - ("-ea" & "st-" words) seal, cheat, mean, start, state, stamp, many, from, came

And lastly, each class has a class performance in one of our many Robertson Roundup Assemblies during the year and ours is coming up the end of February. This test measures both general and specific cognitive abilities, but don't worry. :) There's nothing to study for! This test measures developed abilities and the results will reflect the overall efficiency of cognitive processes and strategies that enable students to learn new tasks or solve problems...especially in the absence of direct instruction. I will be reading this test aloud to all of the students and we will be pacing the test so that we progress from test item to test item as a group so that no child feels rushed to answer quickly.

If you have any questions regarding this test, though, please feel free to contact our Campus Instructional Support Facilitator Karen Kidd. She can be reached by e-mail at kiddk@friscoisd.org or by phone at (469) 633-3680 ext. #53680.

Next, if you haven't already sent a toy in from home, don't forget they are due tomorrow. :) We are studying geometric shapes this week and would love to get your help! Please send in a toy from home that includes as many shapes as possible. (for example - a toy car has wheels that are round and the body of the car is a rectangle) Just be sure the toy will fit in a small brown lunch sack.

And lastly, don't forget that there is no school this Friday, January 15th or on Monday, January 18th so enjoy the long weekend with your kiddos! :)

Sincerely,

Mrs. Green

January 4-8

Happy 2010!!!!!

Here are the objectives we will be covering in class during the week of January 4-8:

Social Studies - Review
Math - Review (Place Value, Fact Families, Missing Addends)
Writing - Word Choice
Science - Rocks
Spelling - (Word Families -y & -and)try, my, fly, land, band, stand, she, in, way, make

Also, this week we will begin our mid-year literacy assessments and won't be having guided reading lessons. My family and I went to visit my aunt and uncle out in Gordon, Texas and had an incredible time. It was nice to be away from home and to not feel guilty about relaxing instead of doing all of those more "necessary" tasks...like my personal favorite...laundry. :)

But now our little break is over and we are ready to get right back into our curriculum. Here is what we will be covering this week:

Social Studies: Past, Present, Future Technology
Writing: 6 Traits - Voice
Math: Missing Addends
Science: Finishing up Scientists & Inventors/Beginning Push, Pull, Force
Spelling: Word Families "ut" and "un" - sun, run, fun, cut, hut, nut, big, not, look, he

Also, your child brought home a "passport application" a few weeks ago. If you haven't already, please fill that out with your child and return it to school as soon as possible. We will need that form for our Holidays Around the World unit that we are starting on Thursday. It should be great fun! :)

And, lastly, don't forget to add our upcoming Multicultural Night to your calendar. It will be happening next week on December 10th and we have a number of our own students participating in some of the onstage presentations. So, be sure to come and see all that will be available that night! It is always an exciting evening. :)

Mrs. Green

November 16-20

Dear Parents,

Don't forget November 16-20 is our bookfair week. Our class was able to get a "sneak peek" at the bookfair selections this past Thursday and each student was given an opportunity to write down some of the books that they would like to purchase. Hopefully you were able to take a moment and see what caught their interest! :) We will be visiting the bookfair as a class again on November 19th. If you forget to send the money in on Thursday, feel free to send it in on Friday and I will send your child down to the bookfair at that time. We will have many parent volunteers on hand to help them with their selections.

Don't forget, though, to include 8.25% tax when figuring out how much money to send! :)

As for our curriculum during the week of November 16-20, we will be learning about the following:

Social Studies: Maps & Cardinal Directions
Writing: 6 Traits - Voice
Math: Review & CBA #3
Science: Scientists & Inventors
Spelling: Word Families "it" and "in" - fit, hit, spit, skin, win, tin, and, see, to, you

And lastly, your child brought home a "passport application" today in his/her folder. However, here at Robertson we like to use the words your children learned as kindergarteners to help them get the hang of how spelling works. :) Over the past 9 weeks they have learned the process of the pre-test and have gotten into the routine of studying for the spelling test each Friday.

Now that the 2nd 9 weeks has begun, though, our lists are increasing! :) But I know we are ready!

Here is our list for this week:

Word families -ap and -an: cap, lap, trap, can, man, plan
Sight words like, no, the, at
Challenge Words - strap, banner, family, cycle, addend

Be sure not to JUST practice the word family words listed, but also help your child to come up with as many words using those chunks as possible (i.e. strap, tap, zap, etc.). Most of the time our 2 bonus words are created using our word families.

Also, I provide an opportunity for all of the students to attempt the challenge words on Friday. If your child is able to spend time learning those words, that is wonderful. However, if those words are too difficult at this time, don't worry about it. Those are just an additional tool to challenge our kids who love spelling!

Mrs. Green

Hich Flyers Assembly

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZIORa03wOug/St3yZ9C7LkI/AAAAAAAAACA/XoFbIJtRI4A/s320/DSC_4452.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394734456357203522" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZIORa03wOug/St3yZSXkbsI/AAAAAAAAAB4/k59fvR9JgyU/s320/DSC_4410.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394734444901068482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZIORa03wOug/St3yY2PhfrI/AAAAAAAAABw/RpYzItgU_10/s320/DSC_4385.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394734437351128754" />
Today was our High Flyers Assembly reminding us to stay "Drug-Free" and we had a blast. We had so much fun conducting our hearing experiment. We listened quietly to 8 different boxes containing different items and came up with our own ideas of what the boxes contained using only our sense of hearing. Then we recorded our thoughts on a table in our journal. It was so interesting to hear all of the students' guesses. They are SO imaginative and creative!
