Please have your child bring in 1 apple between now and Monday morning to aid in the process.

September 28 - October 2
Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for being flexible with the change in our homework process! Hopefully it is helping you fit in everything your child needs to do a little bit easier. :)
This coming week we will be covering the following topics as part of our curriculum:
L.A. - Schema, Visualization
S.S. - Jobs
Writing - Six Traits - Ideas
Math - Addition/Subtraction
Science - Changes in properties
And just a little bit of a reminder...now that the weather is cooling off a little bit and becoming a little less predictable...please send your child to school each day with a light coat "just in case". :)
Have a wonderful rest of the week!

All About Me Posters
Wow!
Our "All About Me Posters" look incredible!!!! I can tell our class worked REALLY HARD! Thank you for helping your child complete that particular project. We will be spending some time tomorrow and the beginning of next week sharing our posters with each other.
Also, thank you for sending in your child's photos for our in class timeline assignment. The students did an incredible job writing their text for each picture as well as predicting their future. We have each of their papers displayed outside our room. So, if you get a chance, stop by and look! They are so good!

A Fun Way To Practice Spelling
Today in class we talked about a great website for the students to use when learning their new spelling words each week. In fact, they are so excited about using it that they wanted me to be sure and include it in my communication with you!
So...here it is! :)
www.spellingcity.com
Each week they can pull up the website and enter their new spelling words. After entering the words they have the option of learning the words, being tested on the words or playing games with the words...whichever you feel they are ready to do!
Have fun!

September 21 - 25
Can't believe we have now been in school for 21 days! :)
This week we will be covering the following topics as part of our curriculum:
L.A. - Schema, Hearing Sounds, Identifying consonants and vowels
S.S. - Timelines
Writing - Writer's Workshop (the process)
Math - Tens/Ones and Addition/Subtraction
Science - Sorting based on properties and patterns
And, as you have probably noticed, we will be handling homework a little differently than we did last week...and a little differently than some of the other 1st grade classes. :) In an effort to eliminate some confusion and give you a little more flexibility regarding WHEN your child does his/her homework, I will be sending home ALL of the homework for the week on Monday. It will be stapled together with a homework form attached. On the form there is a list of tasks to complete each day and a place for you to initial that those things were completed. If your child turns in this packet on Friday by 8:00 with each day initialed he/she receives a green ticket. :)
Hopefully this will help make the homework process a little simpler!
Have an awesome week!

The 5 Senses
Today we continued our discussion of the 5 senses in science and began recording our time in our science journals. We had so much fun conducting our hearing experiment. We listened quietly to 8 different boxes containing different items and came up with our own ideas of what the boxes contained using only our sense of hearing. Then we recorded our thoughts on a table in our journal. It was so interesting to hear all of the students' guesses. They are SO imaginative and creative! And they LOVE science! :) There was one box everyone was sure only contained air! What a surprise when they saw that it actually contained cotton balls!

September 8 - September 11 :)
Next week we will be covering the following topics as part of our curriculum:
L.A. - Schema, Making Sentences, Making Rhymes
S.S. - Citizenship (Elvia Niebla & Eleanor Roosevelt)
Writing - Modeling Writer's Workshop

Also, as you may have noticed, your child was able to check out a book for the first time this week from the library. We have signed up for a reocurring library checkout time on Thursdays, so please be sure to remind your child to bring his/her book back on that day. Of course, there will be times where the library will be unavailable (such as during TAKS testing or book fairs) but when we can we will be visiting the library each Thursday for checkout. :)
And, lastly, don't forget to sign up for a conference time on October 12th if you didn't do so at Curriculum night last night. :) A list of available times went home with your child today for you to review.
Have a WONDERFUL three day weekend and please tell your child I will see him or her on Tuesday!!!!
